Yes. Our Hill Trip to visit the Cairngorm Mountain herd was an unforgettable experience, allowing us to get up close to reindeer in their natural habitat. For anyone short on time, there was also an opportunity to see a smaller group during a Paddock Visit in Glenmore.

The 20-30 minute hike to the reindeer was relatively easy. There were some slippery, muddy areas through the forest, but once we reached the clearing, the trail turned into a boardwalk. The reindeer also preferred it over walking through the mud, causing a few traffic jams along the way. Everyone had an opportunity to feed them a handful of food. As as soon as the bag opened, chaos erupted. The reindeer pushed each other and crowded around anyone with food. We waited until most of the group had their turn and managed to escape the crowd of reindeer.

It was easy to forget they were wild animals. Petting or touching them was prohibited, but the reindeer were allowed to touch us. More than once we were brushed by the velvety antlers or nudged by their noses, but the reindeer were harmless. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer all our questions. We learned a lot about the Cairngorm Mountains, this particular herd, and history of reindeer. We were the last group of the day and able to stay as long as we wanted, but after the food was gone, many reindeer headed higher into the hills.

logistics

We checked in at the The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd Center in Glenmore. Parking at the nearby Glenmore Forest Park Visitor Centre was full, but we found a spot farther down along the side of the road. Our hiking sneakers were approved via emailed photos upon booking, and inspected again at check in. Hiking shoes and a waterproof jacket were required to participate in a Hill Trip. Rentals were available if needed. We recommend also bringing bug spray or a head net. Covered in midge spray, we still had several bites. After check in we received our stickers and drove about 5 minutes to the Sugar Bowl Lot to meet our guide.
